The Sunfish - Sailboat for Six Deccades

A. Morrie Craig acquired a PhD in biophysics in 1970 and took on a position at Oregon State University in 1978. A retired professor and director of the university’s endophyte laboratory, Dr. Morrie Craig has won numerous awards for his academic contributions, including the Oregon Academy of Science’s Oregon Scientist of the Year and a lifetime honorary membership in the Oregon Veterinary Medical Association. Dr. Craig likes to sail and considers it one of his favorite hobbies.

The Sunfish, released in 1960 as a wooden boat, has provided easy access to sailing for many enthusiasts over the years. Seven manufacturers have produced 300,000 boats. The Sunfish can attribute its success to several factors. It is designed for only a single sailor, and its sturdy hull and lateen sail rig add to its safety. Compared to the higher Bermuda rig seen on most current sailboats, the lateen sail keeps the wind flow on the low side and produces less heeling. Another benefit is that when a gale comes up, the lateen rig allows some wind to pass through, lowering the chance of capsizing.
