Former Oregon State University professor and Endophyte Lab director A. Morrie Craig, PhD, has an interest in sled dogs and sled dog racing. Dr. Morrie Craig won the Tom Cooley Memorial Research Award in 1995, which was given by the International Sled Dog Veterinary Medical Association (ISDVMA).
Another honor that the ISDVMA offers to qualified applicants is the Doc Lombard Student Research Award. This award is named for Dr. (Doc) Roland Lombard, a sled dog champion and veterinarian who advocated for the health and welfare of sled dogs. He loved the sport and made significant contributions to the practices of sled dog racing.
The award itself is for the research and study of the health and well-being of sled dogs. The contest is open to veterinary students in programs that give professional degrees. Preference is given to proposals that relate to current issues.
The 2020-2021 recipient of the research award was Ankita Gupta, a North Carolina State University veterinary student. Her paper was titled “Serum Artemin: A Potential Diagnostic Marker for Osteoarthritis Associated Joint Pain in Sled Dogs.”
