Interesting Facts about Greyhounds

Dr. A. Morrie Craig is the former director of the endophyte lab at the Oregon State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Morrie Craig has received numerous honors throughout his career, including the Greyhound Pets of America Service Award.

Greyhounds are known as a gentle, kind, and loyal breed. Here are a few interesting facts about greyhounds:

1. They can run up to 45 miles per hour because of their long legs and lean bodies. They use a gait referred to as double suspension and appear to glide as they move.

2. Greyhounds have thin skin and can get cuts relatively easily. Because of their vulnerable skin, racing greyhounds must wear muzzles to protect other dogs from injury.

3. They are an ancient breed. Archeological evidence in drawings recovered from a Turkish temple indicates that greyhounds existed in 6,000 BC. Other proof of their long history was gained from a vase that depicts images of dogs that appear to be greyhounds in 4,000 BC.
